Share
When it comes to decorating your living space, one of the most important pieces of furniture is the couch. It's the centerpiece of the room, the place where you and your guests will spend the most time. But finding the right size couch for your space can be a challenge. At Couch Potatoes, we offer several collections with various styles and sizes to fit your needs. Let's take a look at some of the options.
Studio Apartments or Small Living Rooms
First, let's talk about small spaces. If you have a studio apartment or a small living room, you may think that a couch is out of the question. But fear not! We have several options that are perfect for small spaces. Our apartment-sized sofas come in a variety of styles and are designed to fit perfectly in small spaces without sacrificing comfort. We also have loveseats and sectionals that are perfect for cozy living rooms.
Smaller Spaces
If you have a slightly larger space but still want a compact couch, consider a two-seater sofa. These are perfect for couples or small families and are available in several styles, from modern to traditional. If you want something a little more versatile, a sleeper sofa is also a great option. These couches can be transformed into a bed, making them perfect for overnight guests.
Medium-Sized Living Room
Now, let's talk about medium-sized spaces. If you have a typical-sized living room, you have a lot of options to choose from. You can go with a classic three-seater sofa or a sectional if you want a little more seating. Sectionals come in various shapes, such as L-shaped or U-shaped, which can be customized to fit your space.
Large Living Rooms
For larger living rooms or open-concept spaces, you can consider a four-seater sofa or a sectional with a chaise. These options provide plenty of seating and are great for hosting large gatherings. A modular sectional is also a great choice for these spaces, as you can customize the layout to fit your specific needs.

We have sectionals that can seat up to 10 people and come in a variety of styles, from sleek and modern to plush and comfortable. You can also consider a set of sofas, such as a three-seater and a two-seater, for a classic look.

Understanding Seat Depth: The Dimension Most People Overlook
You've measured your room and picked the right sofa size - but have you considered seat depth? This often-overlooked dimension affects how you sit every day. If the seat depth is too shallow, your feet dangle and you feel like you might slide off. Too deep, and you're sitting in a hole with no back support.
Inside seat depth is measured from the front of the seat to the back cushion - this is different from the overall depth of the sofa (back of frame to front). According to furniture.com, the average sofa is about 40 inches deep, 60 inches long, and 36 inches high with a 19-inch seat height - but there are no absolutes.
Our Track sofa has an overall depth of 39". The inside seat depth is measured from the front of the couch to right behind those back cushions.
What Seat Depth Is Right for You?
Sofas with a smaller seat depth look more elegant and formal. Sofas with deeper cushions invite you to stretch out and get cozy. Here's how to choose:
- If you're shorter: Choose a smaller seat depth so you don't feel like you're sitting in a hole. The Ladybird sofa has a standard seat depth and height with relatively firm cushions - a balanced choice for most households.
- If you're taller: Go for a larger seat depth. The Fluffy Collection has a very deep seat and plush cushions, perfect for stretching out.
- For families or entertaining: A deeper seat depth means more people can fit comfortably. The Mesa Left Chaise Sectional has a very deep seat with moderately firm cushions - everyone can pile on.
- If you plan to sleep on it: You'll want a seat depth of at least 19 inches - or consider a sleeper sofa like our Wallace Queen Sleeper.
Don't Forget the Cushions
Seat depth matters, but so does what's underneath you. Our back cushions are filled with channeled polyester to prevent sagging, and our seat cushions contain 1.8-density foam for a supportive yet cozy seat. The Mas Mesa Corner Sectional has some of our firmest cushions and one of our deepest seat depths - the back cushions cradle your body while the seat cushions hold you up.
Customize Your Seat Depth
At Couch Potatoes, we offer customization for all of our couches. If you find a sofa you love but the seat depth isn't perfect, no problem! We can adjust the seat depth to make it just right for you, along with your choice of pet-friendly fabric or smooth leather.
