Our Austin Factory: How We Build Custom Furniture in Days, Not Months

At most furniture stores, the sofa on the showroom floor was built thousands of miles away — in a factory overseas, shipped across an ocean in a container, warehoused, then trucked to the store. The whole process takes months, and you never see who built it or how.

At Couch Potatoes, it's different. Our factory is inside our showroom. Walk through our Central Austin store at 7521 N Lamar Blvd and you'll see craftsmen building sofas in real time. Your sofa. Right here in Austin.

Step 1: The Frame

Every piece of furniture starts with the frame. Our frames are built from kiln-dried hardwood — not particleboard, not pine, not the cheap stuff that warps and cracks in a few years. Kiln-drying removes moisture from the wood, which prevents warping and ensures the frame stays true for decades.

The joints are reinforced with corner blocks and secured with screws — not just staples and glue like mass-produced furniture. This is the same construction method used by high-end furniture makers, and it's why our sofas last 10-15+ years.

Step 2: Springs and Suspension

We use sinuous (S-shaped) springs for the seat suspension. These steel springs are clipped to the frame and provide consistent, even support across the entire seating surface. Unlike fabric webbing (used in many budget sofas), sinuous springs maintain their tension over years of use without sagging.

Step 3: Foam and Cushions

Our seat cushions use high-density foam that's firm enough to support you but soft enough to be comfortable for hours. Every cushion is wrapped in dacron fiber to give it that plush, rounded look and add an extra layer of softness.

The back cushions are filled with a blend of fiber and foam, designed to hold their shape while providing that soft, sink-in feeling. No flat pillows after a month.

Step 4: Upholstery

This is where your sofa becomes your sofa. Our upholsterers cut your chosen fabric — from our collection of 200+ options — and expertly wrap it around the frame, pulling it taut and securing it with precision. The patterns are matched, the seams are straight, and every detail is inspected.

Our team includes experienced craftsmen who've been building furniture for years, as well as workers from the Texas Transitional Center — people who were formerly incarcerated and are building new skills and new lives. It's a program we're proud of.

Step 5: Quality Check and Delivery

Before your sofa leaves the factory, it goes through a final quality inspection. We check the frame, the cushions, the upholstery, the legs — everything. If something isn't right, it gets fixed before it ever leaves our shop.

Because we build locally, most custom orders are ready in days, not months. No waiting for a container ship. No tracking a truck across the country. Your sofa is built a few miles from your home and delivered by our own team.

Why Local Manufacturing Matters

  • Quality control: We inspect every piece ourselves. No overseas factory middleman.
  • Speed: Days, not weeks or months.
  • Customization: We can build any piece in any of our 200+ fabrics because we're making it right here.
  • Sustainability: No transoceanic shipping. Shorter delivery distances. We even recycle our foam and fabric scraps into handmade bean bags.
  • Jobs: Every purchase supports Austin jobs and our community partnership with the Texas Transitional Center.

Come See It for Yourself

We're one of the only furniture stores in the country where you can watch your furniture being built. Walk through our factory, ask questions, meet the people making your sofa. It's an experience you won't get anywhere else.
